A new resident of Darwin museum – a taxidermy mount of four-eyed opossum.

(Philander opossum Linnaeus, 1758)

A wonderful opossum taxidermy mount was made by the museum’s taxidermist – Oksana Mbita Ebele.

The opossum is a marsupial of the order Didelphimorphia endemic to the Americas - Central and South America, from Mexico to the Northern Argentina. This is the only representative of marsupials known to live outside Australia.

Opossums tend to be semi-arboreal omnivores, eating small mammals and plants (like leafs, seeds and fruits), as well as living both in low land and mountain forests. It was called “four-eyed” because of the bright white spots above the eyes. The dorsal fur is brown, while the belly, neck and cheeks are of crème color. The adult opossums have black ears. The females have 2-7 offsprings which they carry in their pouch.
