The taxidermied fish collection of Darwin museum has recently been replenished by a new specimen. The museum’s talented taxidermist Oksana Mbita Ebele did an excellent job – she gave a second life to a catch of one of her colleagues who is fond of fishing.
The Eurasian ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus Linnaeus, 1758) is a freshwater fish found in temperate regions of Europe and northern Asia. It usually inhabits the bottom part of lakes, ponds and stays closer to river banks, preferring sandy bottom or gravel. Adult ruffe can reach up to 25 cm in length but is usually around 10cm. Its diet mainly consists of zoobenthos: small aquatic bugs and larvae, as well as small fish and some plants. Although ruffe is pretty aggressive fish for its size it is also prey for bigger fish.
