Wooden painted toys of Nizhny Novgorod and Vladimir regions, Russian North, Moscow region and Ukraine form a significant part of Alexander Mikhailov’s collection, which took him almost three decades to build up. He collected works of modern craftsmen and factory-made Soviet toys, as he recalls in order to preserve for descendants “what was surrounding us - the familiar old Soviet world, including toys, that was vanishing…”

The exhibition displays traditional Gorodets, Fedoseev, Gorokhovets, Polkhov-Maydan, Bogorodskoye toys, as well as long forgotten Ermilov toys and Novin toys recently saved from oblivion. All of them were made by well-known or anonymous craftsmen using various techniques - turning and carpentry, carving and axe-cutting. The Ukrainian section of the collection is represented by Yavoriv toys and colorful Petrikov painting, which has been granted the status of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The wooden toy, which originated several centuries ago, has now become an indigenous part of folk art combining various crafts. Each craft reflects nature of the region, as well as lifestyle, history, and culture of the people inhabiting it. Folk craftsmen have long been using the most accessible material - wood – to cut out figures of animals and birds. Some time later the toys were also decorated with paintings - mostly floral motifs.

Alongside toys visitors will find children's musical instruments, painted with love by Gorodetsky and Polkhov-Maydan artists.
